Directory method

How the directory is ordered

Who is listed, what each listing is built from, how the list is put in order, and what is never an input to that order.

Method version 0.2 · Dated · Change log

1Who is listed

A company is listed when its own published material shows that it designs or sells equipment, under its own name, in one of the directory's five technologies (eddy current separation, magnetic separation, sensor-based sorting, screens, and air and vacuum systems) for recycling use. Whether Remcon Equipment is listed is covered in section 8.

Listing is free. There is no paid inclusion: no company can pay to be listed.

Candidates come from:

  • exhibitor lists from recycling trade shows
  • member directories of trade associations
  • the makers' own websites
  • suggestions from buyers and readers

In the live directory, every candidate is logged with where it came from, whether it was listed, and if not, why not.

2What a listing is built from

Each listing is built from the company's own published material: its website, brochures and specification sheets. In the live directory, every field (technologies, materials recovered, source streams, regions) records the page it came from and the date we read it. A value in a field is in one of three states:

Listed
The company's own published material shows it, or it follows from a listed technology (see Implied materials below).
Not found on the pages we read
We did not find it. This does not say the company cannot supply it.
Confirmed not offered by the maker
The company has published, or told us in writing, that it does not offer it. No listing uses this state yet, and the prototype does not display it.

What counts as evidence

A named office, dealer, service location or installation counts as evidence for a region. A named application page or case study counts for a source stream. Generic claims such as "worldwide" or "all applications" do not count.

Implied materials

An eddy current separator recovers non-ferrous metal, and a magnet recovers ferrous metal. So a listing for eddy current equipment also lists aluminum and non-ferrous recovery, and a listing for magnetic equipment also lists ferrous recovery. When the company's own pages do not name the material, the listing says it is implied, for example "aluminum and non-ferrous (implied by eddy current separation)".

3How the list is ordered

When you tick filters, three steps put the listings in order.

Step 1: the gate

If you tick any technologies, a listing must list at least one of them. If you tick any materials recovered, it must list at least one of them. If you tick both, it must pass both. Listings that do not pass go into a collapsed group at the end, headed with how many there are and what they were not found to list. When you tick both, the heading joins them with "together with", for example "not found to list screens together with aluminum and non-ferrous recovery": each listing in the group lacks at least one of the two, and its own card says which.

Listings in the collapsed group are not counted. They form one group that rotates daily (step 3), or sits in name order under "Name A-Z".

Step 2: the count

Listings that pass the gate are ordered by how many of your other ticked filter groups they match: source stream and region, one point each. A listing matches a group when it lists at least one of the values you ticked in it. Each number of matches gets its own heading, which starts with how many listings sit under it, for example "1 listing matches all 3 of your filters", then "1 listing matches 2 of your 3 filters". With one group ticked the heading says "your filter"; with two, "both of your filters". If you tick only source stream or region, nothing is gated, so a listing can match none of them; those appear last, under "... match none of your filters".

Step 3: daily rotation for ties

Listings with the same count tie, and the order within a tie rotates once a day. With no filters ticked, every listing is in one tie group.

Day numberD = whole days since 1 January 2026, by the UTC date
The tiek listings, in A-Z order at positions a = 0 to k − 1
Display position((a − D mod k) mod k + k) mod k

In practice, each day the listing shown first in a tie moves to the end and the others each move up one place. Over any k days in a row, each of the k listings is shown first once.

Two controls change the order. "Name A-Z" puts the same listings in order by name. "Only show listings that match every filter" hides any listing that misses a filter you ticked.

Worked example

A buyer ticks aluminum and non-ferrous (material recovered), single-stream (source stream) and North America (region served): three filter groups. Material is the gate; stream and region are counted. To keep the example short, it runs the directory's own script on six made-up listings instead of the real ones.

Figure 1. What the directory would show this buyer on October 4, 2026 (D = 276) if it held only six made-up listings: a rendering made when the site is built, by the same script the directory runs, with each listing's other details and buttons left out. The table below gives the same order in words.
Six made-up listings for this buyer on October 4, 2026 (D = 276)
Listing, in orderHeading it appears underListsNot found on the pages we read
1. Sample Separator Co.1 listing matches all 3 of your filtersaluminum and non-ferrous, single-stream, North AmericaNothing
2. Sample Sensor Sorting Inc.1 listing matches 2 of your 3 filtersaluminum and non-ferrous, single-streamNorth America
3. Example Recovery Systems Pty Ltd1 listing matches 1 of your 3 filtersaluminum and non-ferroussingle-stream, North America
4. Example Magnetics Ltd.3 more listings not found to list aluminum and non-ferrous recovery on the pages we read (collapsed)single-stream, North Americaaluminum and non-ferrous
5. Example Screens Co.3 more listings not found to list aluminum and non-ferrous recovery on the pages we read (collapsed)single-stream, North Americaaluminum and non-ferrous
6. Sample Air Systems LLC3 more listings not found to list aluminum and non-ferrous recovery on the pages we read (collapsed)single-stream, North Americaaluminum and non-ferrous

The first 3 pass the gate and do not tie: they match 3, 2 and 1 of the 3 filters, so each has its own heading. The last 3 were not found to list aluminum and non-ferrous recovery, so they sit in the collapsed group, where they are not counted: they form one group and the daily rotation orders them. On October 4, D = 276 and 276 mod 3 = 0, so that group reads Example Magnetics Ltd., Example Screens Co., Sample Air Systems LLC. On October 5, D = 277 and 277 mod 3 = 1, so it reads Example Screens Co., Sample Air Systems LLC, Example Magnetics Ltd.

This table is computed when the site is built, by the same script the directory runs in your browser.

4The RFQ recipient list

The aluminum guide's RFQ form offers every listing whose technology the guide covers: eddy current separation, magnetic separation, sensor-based sorting and screens. Air and vacuum systems are not offered, because the guide does not cover them.

Listings with eddy current or sensor-based equipment go under "Recover non-ferrous directly". Listings with only magnets or screens go under "Upstream in an aluminum line". Within each group the order rotates daily by the rule in section 3. Nothing is ticked for you, and Remcon Equipment is not a recipient.

5Why these factors

  • Material or technology is the problem you are solving. A company that does not list it cannot help with that problem, so these two decide whether a listing is in the main list at all.
  • Source stream and region measure fit. They weigh the same, one point each, because which matters more depends on the buyer.
  • You decide what is decisive. Tick "Only show listings that match every filter" and every filter you ticked becomes a requirement.

6What is never an input

None of these is an input to the order, or to whether a company is listed:

  • payment of any kind, including listing fees, advertising, referral fees and sponsorship
  • partner status, including deals under negotiation
  • Remcon Equipment's commercial interest
  • a supply relationship between a listed company and Remcon Equipment, in either direction
  • what a buyer's inquiry might be worth to anyone
  • how a company deals with the publisher, including whether it asks for corrections
  • popularity, page views or clicks
  • company size
  • any opinion of the equipment's quality

7Money and relationships

Revenue from manufacturers today: none. The publisher intends to seek paid referral agreements with some listed companies. Current agreements: none.

If an agreement is signed:

  • the company's listing carries a label naming the relationship, such as "Paid referral agreement", and the date it began
  • the agreement is not an input to the order: the listing is placed by the same rule as every other
  • the change log on this page records it

If the site ever sells a paid placement, it appears in a separate box labelled "Paid placement", outside the list. A paid placement never takes a position inside the list.

Supply relationships with Remcon. Remcon Equipment buys rotors, complete separators, magnets, screens and feeders from other makers, so a listed company may be one of its suppliers. If a listed company supplies Remcon Equipment, or buys from it, its listing and its line in the RFQ recipient list say so, for example "Supplies Remcon Equipment". The relationship is not an input to the order. In this prototype, Industrial Magnetics and Dings carry the label, from Remcon's own records. For every other company the line stays a visible placeholder until Remcon's shop confirms which makers the screens and feeders it resells come from.

8Remcon

Remcon Equipment, Inc. is an affiliate of [LLC name], the publisher. Remcon designs and builds conveyors and eddy current separator systems, around rotors or complete separators made by others. It also builds overhead magnet units, magnetic head pulleys and trommels, and resells screens and feeders.

Whether Remcon is listed in the live directory has not been decided. If it is, it is listed under the inclusion rule in section 1 like any other company, placed by the same ordering rule, with an "Affiliate of the publisher" label. Its listing would have no RFQ button, because Remcon Equipment is not a recipient on the RFQ form. Remcon is not listed in this prototype.

9Corrections

Send corrections to [corrections address]. We reply within [n] business days. A correction is one of two kinds:

We misread something that was public at our last read
We fix it as soon as we confirm it, whoever reports it: the company, a competitor or a reader.
The company published something after our last read
We pick it up at the next scheduled sweep, which re-reads every listing on the same schedule. Sweeps run every [interval].

In the live directory, every correction is recorded with what changed and when.
